THE CLOSET CLEANSE

THE CLOSET CLEANSE

I have just recently moved apartments and have always been a big fan of 'cleansing the closet'. It can be a gruelling, time-consuming process, but it is also a great way to mentally and physically let some things go. Whether you are moving, relocating overseas, going through a break up or just attempting a ‘life’ detox, cleansing your closet is a great way to revive your look and really hone into and perfect your own personal style.

The following are 10 tips for giving your wardrobe a much-needed makeover!

Next time you are doing a ‘throw-out’ consider the following for the Vinnies pile or bin:

1.     Anything you haven’t reached for, looked at or thought about for over 12 months. It needs to go.
2.     Clothing that is too short, too tight, too big, or just too much of a shopping regret. Toss it.
3.     Those “little left to the imagination” denim shorts. You know the ones, the “festival shorts” that are more cheek than chic. No one wants your behind in their face while you are atop of a pair of sweaty shoulders.
4.     That fake-tan stained white staple tee that has been your best friend for years. The everyday item that you dressed up and down and up again. White isn’t cool if its not white. Say goodbye and upgrade.
5.     A pair of your favourite jeans that you’re just not feeling anymore but cant let go of. If you want to reinvent them, try cutting them into shorts, fray the edges, fold to your desired length and rock with a simple cropped tee. To create a more distressed look, have at them with a small cheese grater and bleach. Jeans reborn.
6.     Those dirt-cheap pumps you wore a year ago to a house party to wake up the next day with a black toenail. A week later, no toenail. Toenails are precious. THE SHOES AREN’T WORTH IT.
7.     The slightly loose, wrinkled around the knees and transparent around the booty yoga pants. Give your fellow yogi behind you a reason to say ‘namaste’ not nam-ass-day.
8.     The on trend must-have item of last season that you purchased because it was “totally in” and not because you fell in love with it. If you don’t LOVE it, don’t buy it. It’s not about becoming a trend, it’s about interpreting a trend with your own sense of style.
9.     That flimsy bikini you still have tucked away was fabulous during the summer you spent in Europe, but now the bottoms are more sag than swag. Yes it may be a memento, but ditch it. You have the memories and stories.
10.  Anything that doesn’t speak to your character and style. You need to feel amazing and happy in what you wear. So if you’re not getting this vibe with certain pieces, you’re better off without them.

As the always, glamorous Rachael Zoe once stated, “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak”. With that said, any piece of clothing in your closet that doesn’t SCREAM you, isn’t doing you any favours. That silent conversation a stranger has with you when perusing your flawlessly structured outfit is a very important one. Smile and work it with confidence. You don’t get a second chance at a first impression.
