I was lucky enough to recently interview the gorgeously elegant
star of aussie television drama series “A Place to Call Home” Abby Earl; about her personal style, favourite designers and red carpet preparation. Abby
plays the character of Anna Bligh, a fiery, brave and fun-loving family girl
becoming a woman in the tumultuous time of outback Australia in the 1950’s.
How kind of you! But I certainly do
not wake up every day feeling flawless! I think because I wear make up in my
line of work, I really like to go full days, where I wear no make up at all. I
think its important to give you skin a break, and it always feels wonderful
after several days and nights in a row of wearing make up, to just feel all
natural and bare.
I think I draw most of my personal fashion inspiration from classic looks
such as Chanel, with her clean lines and simple yet classic colour palette. I
also love to style of Audrey Hepburn, a nice high-waisted pant, fitted shirts,
and sleek flats for the day, and then a beautiful strapless classic gown with
long gloves, hair up, or a gown with a nice high neck. I think I really
gravitate towards the most classic style, fashion that has endured over time,
and I try to wear 'classy' looks, I will never opt for the mini skirt and crop
top! I once worked with a stylist who loved the saying: style over skin, and I
couldn't agree more.
I try very hard to support Australian
designers, because I think we do have some of the most creative designers here.
At the moment I am absolutely obsessed with J'Aton Couture, by far my
favourite! I just love the detail they put into each design, and the way their
pieces really accentuate the feminine shape.
Take me through the process
of your 'red carpet event' preparation.
Well it starts the night before! Plenty of water and a BIG meal for lots
of energy, I am not into starving myself! I am proud of exactly the way I am,
and I think we should embrace the away we look, not starve ourselves or change
ourselves to looking like anybody else.
Also, lots of sleep the night before.
I usually put a mask on the night before, SKII, and I always wash my hair the
night before, and try to get 8hrs sleep.
The day of, in the morning I usual
start with some yoga because standing in heels all day and into the night,
demands some physical prep! Then I’ll have a big breakfast and into hair and
make up. My gorgeous friend Wizzy Molineaux whom is the head hair & make up
artist on A Place to Call Home,
usually does my hair and make up, so usually she will come to my house and
we'll have champagne as she works! She knows my face and hair so well it
usually takes her no more than 2 hours. Only at the very last minute do I put
on my gown, because knowing me I will spill something on it!
What/who did you wear to the
ACTAA awards this year?
To the daytime awards luncheon I wore
Trelise Cooper, who is a genius New Zealand designer and to the evening awards
I wore Rachel Gilbert. I was styled by the beautiful stylist Jodie Susskind of
Sweaty Betty. She really helped me chose gowns I would never normally put on,
and she was absolutely right! So many people told me I was 'best dressed' and I
have her to thank!
You look gorgeous on 'A
Place to Call Home'. What is it like getting to wear all of those beautiful
period costumes?
I am really lucky on that show because
99% of what I wear is made for me! Sometimes even the under wear! So it's
always a treat to have something fit you so perfectly, and all the designs are
inspired direct from 1953. If I'm not wearing 'a make' as we call them, I am
usually in some stunning Chanel vintage dress, or Chanel vintage cardigan,
which always makes me feel glamorous and helps get me into character.
Look out for season 2 of “A Place to Call
Home” on channel 7
